TRUMP-THE FIRST DEBATE
Below I have commented on the debates, and then listed a few of the topics I would like Trump to have responded in his next performance.
The Debate:
Ok, chaos is what I watched. Trump made it unpleasant to keep watching. Trump never learned sharing as a child and hogging time and interruptions made it ugly. None of the norms of debate were honored. Trump engaged in rule breaking. Fact checking Trump’s lies along with Trump having no message made it seem like a freak show. Trump at one time threatened the mediator Mike Wallace of Fox and it was ugly.
Trump kept trying to put into Biden’s mouth other primary democratic candidates plans such as Medicare-for-all from Bernie and the far left Green New Deal trying to paint moderate Biden as a far left liberal. Trump was aggressive and constantly ignored debate rules.
Some takeaways, Trump encourages his supporters to poll watch, he refused to condemn white nationalists groups the FBI labels as hate groups such as Boogaloo Boyz, and the Proud boys, both armed hate groups that have been found to disrupt peaceful protesters. The FBI has labeled white supremacy groups as hate groups.
Proud Boys are an armed hate group that has called Trump their leader. They feel that whites are being suppressed. To become a member you must get into a fight with protesters. Trump said to them “stand back” and “stand by” in the debates. 76% of terrorist attacks in the United States come from right wing hate groups. Trump’s actions will incite violence and are very inappropriate comments that will only recruit new members to the causes.
Trump was being himself in the debate, a disruptive bully that follows his own rules. He attempts to intimidate, talk over, lie, interject false narratives and never talking about what he did but what Biden would have done with the virus, speculating 2 million deaths.
He again said he knew more than his own health officials including the head of “Operation Warp Speed.” When told that the vaccine would be later than the election he pushed back saying he knew better after talking to the manufacturers (of course manufacturers have no incentive to oversell their product to boost their stock prices and for a POTUS boast?). Trump is willing to override public health officials on the word of pharmaceutical manufacturers over the objections of the CDC and FDA because he knows better, after all they believe in profit at any price. (Is Trump’s thinking public health officials being suckers for working for the government when they could be in private practice and must be stupid, you think?) The FDA is also saying 1st to 2nd quarter before a vaccine would be available to the general public. Trump has also said the virus would disappear when it got warm, it would go away by April, remember?
It’s obvious Trump is afraid of civil discourse and his childlike show of bullying, his deflecting, disruption, are all to make the process seem unseemly and to discourage the voter. Biden was never able to articulate his plans without constant disruption, injection of lies and comments, all of `which was Trump’s attempt to paint Biden within a liberal agenda.
Trump was unhinged and Biden seemed to be the more presidential. There are some takeaways from the debate: Trump was un-tethered, he bullied, talked over both Biden and the Fox mediator.
The tag “Sleepy Joe” would not stick after this performance by Joe who stood his ground. Trump had made projective comments about Joe not being able to make a complete sentence only because Trump’s interruptions. This lowered the bar for Biden and he easily jumped over in the debate.
Trump made an ominous warning about mail in ballots, saying mail in ballots are rife with fraud. Trump warned that “this is not going to end well” in describing the election. When asked if he would ask his followers to refrain from civil unrest he said: “I’m urging my supporters to go into the polls and watch very carefully.”
On the pandemic, Trump tried to deflect and accused Biden of potentially killing over 2 million people so he can brag and is able to say “see how well I performed.” Sure so Biden warned of the effects and what should be done in a late January USA today op-ed and he had a plan by mid-March.
Trump has yet to release a comprehensive pandemic plan which has been promise for weeks. Trump would not endorse the use of masks and questioned the science. Biden quoting the head of the CDC that masks and social distancing if observed could save as many as 100,000 lives by the start of next year. Trump of course knows better? I cannot for the life of me why someone that would promote a prophylaxis saying what could it hurt if it helps, would be so hypocritical about masks unless he wants to politicize using masks to divide the country?
The President engaged in petty schoolyard taunts with put-downs and insults more fitting for the playground attempting to lure Biden into his cesspool. “There’s nothing smart about you” Trump told Biden referring to his scholastic performance. Funny thing about that Trump has hidden his scholastic records for decades and threatens law suits if they are given out. Wonder why? Biden slips up and stoops to his level and tells what he feels is the truth: ”You are the worst president America has ever had.” Biden latter called Trump a “clown” after his less than entertaining performances. He also asked him to “shut-up” at one point when he kept interrupting his answers.
The tax elephant was one of the biggest deflections When Wallace homed in on how much Trump paid in Federal Income Taxes. Trump’s response was: “Millions of dollars” totally counter to the NYTimes report. Biden asked Trump to: “show us your taxes.” Trump referring to his audit said “as soon as it’s finished.” The twelfth of never is just as valid an answer.
Trump again refers to his non-existent health care plan that “we guaranteed preexisting conditions.” This is false, Trump since 2016 has attempted to eliminate the Affordable Care Act. Currently in the Supreme Court, with government lawyers which are normally used to defend laws passed by congress, are now asked to strike down legitimate legislation that affects and has an effect on 20 million people and 80-100 million with pre-existing conditions. Trump’s Executive Order is a useless toothless document and legislation would be required if the ACA is struck down to protect the 100 million people from discrimination if you have pre-existing conditions.
Prior to the debate the poling asked who would win the debates, the response was Biden 54% and Trump 45%. After the debates in a poll asking who won the debates suggests Biden 60%, Trump 28%. If Trump’s plan was to discourage individuals from participating in democracy and stay home, he may have succeeded with his disgusting performance showing the ugly underbelly of current no holds barred slash and burn republican politics.
Topics I would like to have seen discussed:
The issue of his taxes will be the elephant in the room in the first debate. The Biden campaign should use taxes as well as the Trump Covid-19 response and 205,000 deaths in order to score points. The naked emperor lies and dismissed the tax news as fake? If the NYTimes story is fake show us your taxes to prove they are fake.
The NYTimes article about the Trump team and the NYT revelations on his taxes. The article goes on to say; “… There was quiet concern within the campaign, where aids took note of daily tracking numbers from Rasmussen Reports, a typical rosy assessment of how the president is fairing, that showed support falling after the tax story. Among Mr. Trump’s circle, there was finger-pointing about how the issue was handled and his hesitancy to discuss with him an issue they know he is sensitive about.”
Ignore the Covid-19 deaths? The Covid-19 lack of initial response and manipulation of data and lying about the health risk to children only to serve his political goals while the facts are they can become infected and spread like any other individual with the disease, even though they may be asymptomatic or not having the worst of the symptoms. The big lie, Trump lies, people die.
Trump and conservative Christians that support Trump should be made aware of a new Atlantic article titled “Trump Secretly Mocks His Christian Supporters.” The article states that many of trumps comments on religion are marked with cynicism and contempt. The article says: ”Former aide told me they’ve heard Trump ridicule conservative religious leaders, dismiss various faith groups with cartoonish stereotypes, and deride certain rites and doctrines held sacred by many of the Americans who constitute his base.” The military, his aids, his department appointees, his religious base. Is there someone besides, Ivanka or some of those (not all) named Trump, that Donald does not have contempt for?
